Thinking Inside the Box: Innovative Solutions for Rice County’s Challenges

People often ask me, “How will you fix <insert problem here> as sheriff?” Well, the usual answers involve things like “catch more bad guys,” “write more tickets,” or “get more money and deputies.” While these might help sometimes, we need to think differently about solving problems. Rather that just throwing more money at age old problems.

An illustrative image depicting a man in the act of throwing paper money at a large, abstract representation of a problem, symbolized by a giant question mark. The man, dressed casually, appears determined yet somewhat perplexed by the inefficacy of his actions. Paper bills are captured in mid-air, creating a dynamic scene that visually represents the concept of attempting to solve complex issues with financial resources alone. The humorous tone of the image underscores the message that not all problems can be resolved by simply spending money.

Let me explain with an example: Imagine there’s a box of thumbtacks and a tea candle on a desk. Now, here’s the challenge: use these items to stick the candle to the wall. Take a moment to think about how you’d do it before reading ahead.

An inventive display showing a small tea-type candle nestled inside an empty thumbtack box, which is suspended against a sheetrock wall. The box's lid, equipped with a flap, is laid flat and pinned directly to the wall with thumbtacks, allowing the box to hang open beneath it. The scene is captured from a close distance, emphasizing the creative reuse of everyday items to create a unique and warm visual. The gentle light from the candle adds a cozy atmosphere to the setup.

Okay, ready for the solution? We usually use thumbtacks to pin things on boards or walls, right? But what if we also use the box — the thing that holds the thumbtacks — to help solve the problem? This time we’ll be thinking “thinking inside the box.” 🙂

A unique and creative setup shows an empty box, once containing thumbtacks, now repurposed to hold a small, lit tea-type candle. The box is ingeniously attached to a sheetrock wall, with its lid's flap laid flat against the wall and secured with thumbtacks. The open box dangles below, warmly illuminating the candle within. This image captures the inventive transformation of mundane objects into a striking wall-mounted candle holder, highlighting a clever solution to repurposing everyday items for decorative lighting.

Now, back to the questions people ask me. Sometimes, we keep trying the same old tactics to solve problems in Rice County, like a broken record. But doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is just crazy. We need to look at our resources in new ways, like we did with the thumbtacks and box, and approach problems from different angles.

If I become sheriff, this is exactly how I’ll tackle our problems. Sure, sometimes we’ll need more money, deputies, and enforcement. But are they always the answer? I don’t think so. I promise to think creatively and find innovative solutions before spending your hard-earned tax dollars.
